Graduates of the prestigious Medio School for Girls will be prepped for one of two occupations: Primera or Segunda. One deals with the emotional, the other with the domestic. Both are for the furtherance of their husbands. It may seem disparaging—raise his children or run his household—but for girls like Daniela Vargas, it means the promise of opulence, of plenty, but most of all, of protection from the deprivation-motivated violence that overruns her birthplace. She is Medio’s diamond—their valedictorian and most auspicious alum. But this did not come without sacrifice. Her parents martyred themselves so that their daughter could attend Medio, even doctoring documentation for her acceptance—so the future of herself and her family is in serious peril if her true pedigree is ever exposed. With her marriage to the son of a high-up politician impending, all she knows is that she cannot screw this up. But when the resistance forces—those pursuing a free and equal Medio—plead with her to do some espionage, she must either throw away what mother and father fought so hard for—and what is almost hers—or look out for herself.
